It’s no secret the impact of carbon emissions on the planet is significant. In response, First Bus took action to accelerate decarbonisation and improve local air quality by committing to have a completely zero-emission fleet by 2035. First Bus also hosts the UK’s largest charging station in Glasgow, and has already launched several electric buses across its operating regions.
Ahead of the COP26 conference taking place in Glasgow, I was asked to help First Bus engage with COP26 delegates on both of these topics, by creating an emotional connection with them through an immersive experiential journey.
The key objective was to develop a comprehensive rebrand to position the agency as a forward-thinking, creative leader in the product design space. The new branding needed to have a clean, minimalist aesthetic that appeared professional, yet conveyed creativity.
In conjunction with the rebrand, a new responsive website was required to replace xDesign’s outdated online presence. The website required simplified navigation and content structure for an optimal user experience.
The timeline for the combined rebrand and website was approximately 3-4 months. The integrated efforts were meant to elevate its market position and differentiate xDesign from its competitors.
‘Put public transport first’’—that was the proposition behind the experiential activation created for First Bus. COP26 delegates arriving at Glasgow Airport started their journey at a branded bus stop and were taken on a visually branded journey to First Bus’ new electric charging station—which is the UK’s largest.
I also created branded collateral for the activation including a living wall, airport express bus stance, internal bus adverts, perimeter fencing, and signage.
The increased user sessions and greater page views proves that the new design effectively showcases xDesign’s expertise in a manner compelling users to explore. The increases represent a substantial improvement in cultivating user interest and establishing the agency's reputation as innovative product design leaders.
As we transition away from diesel engines, First Bus launched the company's first Hydrogen and Electric bus fleets in Aberdeen and Glasgow respectively. As part of the rollout campaign, I created two films within 6 months, showcasing the benefits of the green technology in the spirit of the two unique Scottish cities. Say Fit Like!
